The Update Files Updates are new versions of programs that provide bug fixes or game enhancements to older versions. Sometimes an updater will fix a critical bug, sometimes it fixes something that has no bearing on your computer. You can come right here to find out what’s new and what it does. Then you can find the updaters you need on the IMG CD. If there’s a Read Me file included, do. Sometimes they give very good advice. • Dark Forces 1.2 This new version offers up several user-encountered bug fixes, including the high-pitched rattle, a crashing situation on certain Power Mac configurations, and memory, color table, stereo panning, and Thread Manager fixes. The Read Me First! file has useful advice on saving your old Pilots. • Wing Commander III 1.0.2 This update is very small, but potential a life saver. Previously, when an enemy missile locked on to you, a warning sound played very softly. They’ve made it louder now. Also, they’ve fixed a few small bugs. Also, the Read Me file is very helpful in wringing the most fun out of the game. • ChoiceStick 1.2.0 The new software is here, and it’s a big improvement over version 1.0.2. The mouse control interface has been completely redesigned, and is now, in their words, “darn cool.” They’ve also made other changes, all of which produce a better game interface when you’re using your old game controllers. • Dirt Bike 3.0 Gone are the black and white graphics! Gone is the wrap-around terrain! Welcome to a new era in Dirt Bike! Color graphics, larger than life (or at least larger than it used to be) images, same bikin’ action... And it’s still shareware! • Gopher Golf 3.0.2 This third version of Gopher Golf has numerous changes, beginning with all new graphics, new mouse controls, new preferences, and a significantly more random function. (To my unpracticed eye, the graphics look just the same. Nice new opening splash screen, though.) If you liked your miniature golf before, you’ll like it now, too. Updated this Issue Apeiron 1.0.2 - minor update, might as well upgrade, eh? ChoiceStick 1.2.0 - fixes some bugs, new interface, “darn cool” Dark Forces 1.2 - major bug fixes for Mac and Power Mac Dirt Bike 3.0 - Must have update, this new version is a beauty! Gopher Golf 3.0.2 - All new graphics Harpoon Classic CD 1.57h - minor updates Harpoon Classic Editor 1.54b - minor updates Hearts Deluxe 4.3 - minor update of this excellent game KnightEdit 2.0.3 - a little color, a few tweaks PowerPOKER 1.3 - small update, included once before Space Joust 2.0.6 - minor update with more challenging gameplay Wing Commander III 1.0.2 - minor update More for Your Game: Scenarios, Cheaters and Add-Ons We’ve collected all the new cheaters and scenarios we could find, and anything else we thought might help Mac gamers get as much enjoyment out of their games as possible. Cheaters can diminish your game experience if you’re not careful, but we trust you to know when to say when. Scenarios are usually made by our readers or others out there with the itch to create. We won’t take responsibility for their quality, but you’re sure to find some gems in what we bring you. The following is what we’ve found this month to give you more for your game. • Marathon looks better than ever, with a handful of maps, scenarios, and custom physics files. Anybody mad about Akira, the japanese nuclear comic? Check out the Akira Complex map set. There’s also a very inventive story about a future Earth, where magic has evolved alongside spacefaring, and you are aboard the first interstellar craft. Look for Attack on the Xanthan. And if you’ve been wishing to try the impossible, try the Pit II. Guaranteed to do you in. Also this month, the Bio-Eliminator Cannon, Jupiter Attack, The Goo Factor, and Wacky Fun, among others. Also, for you scenario creators, look for Pfhred in the editors folder, a shapes editor that makes it much easier to make your own images. And finally, the Marathon Cheater is now at version 3.5, and works with Marathon, the Marathon 2 sneak preview, and all other flavors, too. • Dark Forces fans had a bad month last month, but we make up for it this time. First we’ve got a preview of a Corellian Corvette minilevel. But that’s just to whet your appetite, ‘cause we’ve got a prisoner rescue in the Cloud City on Bespin, a search of the Imperial Base on Hoth, a daring stolen X-Wing recovery, the destruction of the power station that powers the Dark Troopers, and Kyle Katarn’s nightmares. And if you’ve got net access, check out this Dark Forces site at http://www.primenet.com/~bradman/darkforces.html • Doom II just keeps getting better with every .WAD file we find. We’ve got a ton of scenarios for you this month, including one that adds the Star Trek uniforms from the Next Generation. (Some people are so picky about their Trek!) We’ve also got a .WAD that adds the sounds from the Aliens movies, and a boxing .WAD where you’re in the ring (please use only your fists!), and Judgement Day, wherein the players face off in arena battle (very nicely designed, btw), And then there are a ton of others, too (eighteen in all!). If you’ve got any questions, or any problems, be sure to check out the MacDoom FAQ folder in the Doom folder on this CD-ROM. They’ve got your answers. Plus, now there’s a Web site where you can go to find the latest Doom II scenarios, constantly updated. We’ve checked this site out, and you should too! Point your browsers at the “Hell on Mac” page (and we thought that was Windows!) at http://haven.ios.com/~bookers/Dwad.html • Hearts Deluxe players, take heart, and keep it safe. There are some new players on the block, and they’re just dying to meet you. A little late for Halloween, but the Skeleton Crew will be waiting, whenever you’ve got the guts. • Power Pete Cheater 1.2 is a small update from the previous version, but it now has the coveted “Max All” button to give you everything of everything in your quest to save the bunnies. • Walkthrus and Codes. Can’t hack it? Need to be led through by the hand? Need an extra life, an extra bit o’ cash? If you’ve been stumped by Warcraft, here are the cheat codes you need. They’ll get you extar money, they’ll transport you to any scenario, and they’ll make your armies invincible. • Saved Games and Scenarios. We’ve got, for your enjoyment over the holidays, several Links Pro shots for you to compete against, Shanghai II tilesets, including Bangle and Bauble tiles (best in millions of colors), Cowboy Movie tiles, and the challenging SilverButtons tileset, and a bunch of cool tracks and bikes, for both Dirt Bike 2.1 and Dirt Bike 3.0. There’s also a set of graphics to replace the gliders in Glider Pro with a high flying American Glider, and several houses to fly them in, a few Gopher Golf greens, and a number of Wolf3D levels. And we top it all off with twenty-six (26!) SimCities for your enjoyment! Help Us If you are updating your game, please send us a note with the changes you’ve implemented. A copy of your Read Me file would do fine. That way we will be sure to include you in our next issue. E-mail us at GameBits1@aol.com Disclaimer All of the shareware files or free updaters listed above are available on this CD-ROM. Always apply patches, hacks, or updaters to a copy of your program! Nobody but you is responsible if you mangle your original.
